Cuties, A Marketing Nightmare for Netflix

Whether you watched the Netflix movie "Cutie" or not, we all should be mad at the movie's marketing.

Cuties - Netflix 2020 Comedy/Drama

Although I haven’t watched the French film “Cuties” that is described as a coming-of-age comedy-drama that was released on Netflix this month, I have been in discussions regarding what I choose and not choose to watch concerning this movie. From what I understand, the film is supposed to be social commentary against the sexualization of young children. Again, without having seen the film I’ll say that’s fine. However, the marketing of the film contradicts that premise. As a person who deals with, is educated on and understands marketing, I think Netflix brought the backlash over this film on themselves. The way that the film has been marketed has turned may people off (I being one of them) and some people have even called for a boycott of Netflix because of it. Personally, if I were an executive at Netflix I would have insisted on a name change and I would saw to it that other images were used (that did not look like the sexualization of young girls) to promote this film. That would have been a start.
